Główną różnicą między złożem konwencjonalnym a niekonwencjonalnym jest obecność materii organicznej w złożach niekonwencjonalnych. Materia organiczna składa się z kerogenu (~90%) i bitumu (~10%). Po osiągnięciu dojrzałości kerogen najpierw wytwarza ropę naftową, a następnie gaz. Pozostaje jednak pewna ilość pozostałości w postaci czystego węgla (grafitu). Aby lepiej zrozumieć wydobycie węglowodorów z łupków, ważną rolę odgrywa multidyscyplinarne podejście łączące geologię, geomechanikę, geochemię, geofizykę, petrofizykę i fizykę skał.
