Aunque a diario olvidamos su carácter inevitable, la muerte está en todos lados. Al llegar de forma inesperada, el lugar del suceso se vuelve especial —a pesar de la tragedia— y se le señala con una marca, ¿qué seríamos si no lo hacemos? Por eso existen los cenotafios, pequeñas cruces o distintivos que se levantan sobre el asfalto o entre la hierba para señalar el lugar donde terminó la vida de alguien. Pequeños monumentos: para un niño santo, para una joven estrella o para personas ordinarias, «en una cotidianidad aterrada por el acecho de la voluntad de Dios». ¿Cuántos cenotafios hemos visto? ¿Habremos pasado ya por el nuestro sin darnos cuenta? Cenotafios interpreta realidades cotidianas a través de narradores sagaces, que reconocen en sus personajes el hastío de una vida a merced de un dios que sonríe burlón a costa de su creación. Los cuentos hablan de habitantes de una urbe como Guadalajara, que, de una u otra forma, se ganaron un cenotafio solo por haber vivido allí. «Los cenotafios son nuestra marca en la vida, nuestra memoria, la manera de hacernos presentes los que no le importamos a nadie. Es marcar la vida, como un rasguño en la piel, para que no seamos borrados por completo». 4
