The novel is set in Ireland during the late 19th century and early 20th century.Mary is a young woman who has decided to remain celibate in order to focus on her career as a painter. She meets Denis, a middle-aged man who has also chosen to remain celibate, and the two become close friends. Denis is a successful businessman who has never married and has no children. He has chosen to remain celibate in order to focus on his work and to avoid the complications of romantic relationships.Judith is an elderly woman who has also chosen to remain celibate.
