本书的书名颇有书卷气，副题实实在在地道出'长沙邓门三代自述家风'。书的主要作者是一对职业军人夫妇，离退休以后在上海的军人干休所里写下人生回忆。他们的亲友（先辈、后人、战友）也有不同文字选入。书中男主角邓亭有一幅自挽联：三部战士 践行术有专攻 探赜索隐 天书得识一介书生 笃信学无止境 皓首穷经 真理予求自云'三部战士'，指加入大陆的总参三部，按官方公开的网络说法，那里又称'监听部'，主要负责侦听、处理和转送境外电台的通信传播信号，有点类似美国的国家安全局（NSA）。邓亭早早进入三部，又早早成为研究人员，攻坚的指挥人员。他回顾一生有'三对'：走对了路，进对了门，找对了婆。后一'对'，高度概括婚姻家庭美满，书中尽有不同人的不同记述。全书文笔清新真实，追述了苦难曲折又幸运的历程，战乱中成长，特种行业中的杰出贡献，家族世代相传的家风，都娓娓道来。谈到文革中的遭遇，更是令人唏嘘。
