1890年3月7日，竺可桢出生于浙江绍兴东关镇（今属浙江省绍兴市上虞区）一个小商人家庭。1909年竺可桢考入唐山路矿学堂（今西南交通大学）学习土木工程；1910年公费留美学习；1918年获得哈佛大学博士学位；1920年秋应聘南京高等师范学校；1929年起屡次被选任为中国气象学会会长；1934年参与创建中国地理学会；1936年4月担任浙江大学校长，历时13年；1949年担任中国地理学会理事长，同年11月中国科学院成立以后，竺可桢被任命为副院长、生物学地学部主任；1950年当选为中华全国自然科学专门学会联合会全国委员会委员、中华全国科学技术普及协会副主席；1955年选聘为中国科学院学部委员（院士），兼任生物学地学部主任；1956年'综合考察工作委员会'正式成立，竺可桢担任委员会主任；1962年6月加入中国共产党；1974年2月7日去世，享年84岁。竺可桢是中国物候学的创始人，对中国气候的形成、特点、区划及变迁等，对地理学和自然科学史都有深刻的研究。《竺可桢的故事/侨界杰出人物故事丛书》以时间为线索介绍了竺可桢先生平凡而的一生。全书围绕竺可桢先生的故乡生活、求学经历、教育科研工作等方面的内容，通过一个个精彩纷呈的小故事，使读者们学习并了解竺可桢先生多彩的科学人生。
