La connotación pública en el ejercicio de la política se ha cultivado en Chile básicamente desde el Con- greso y La Moneda. Pero, sin duda, el mejor sitio para medirla siempre ha sido el teatro Caupolicán. La historia enseña que quienes no eran capaces de llenar las tribunas de esa arena no podían aspirar a un escaño parlamentario y mucho menos al sillón presidencial. Un “caupolicanazo” era el sueño de todo movimiento o liderazgo político que aspirase a una instancia superior de representatividad. Desde la experiencia de una extensa vida parlamentaria y el sello de su singular elocuencia, el autor de este libro rescata la rica historia política del teatro Caupolicán. Y anticipa que lo hace a lomo de una memoria emocional y no desde la óptica de un cientista político o de un historiador. “Se trata de un libro sin ataduras, que da una mirada inquisitiva a hechos históricos, penosamente ya sepultados en el tiempo. Y para mayor desgracia, condenados al olvi- do. Había que rescatarlos, porque la gran mayoría de ellos son piezas claves para entender mejor una parte de nuestra historia.” Pocos han tenido el privilegio de hablar en el Caupolicán. Pero, todavía nadie ha podido lograr que el propio Caupolicán hable de su pasado. En suma, la memoria que desprenden los muros de este señero recinto que revela parte de la historia de Chile desde el “caupolicanazo”.
