Casanovas Heimfahrt ist eine Novelle von Arthur Schnitzler, die im Sommer 1918 in der Literaturzeitschrift Die neue Rundschau in Berlin erschien. Zum Inhalt: 1778, in seinem 53. Lebensjahr, wartet Casanova in Mantua auf ein Zeichen aus Venedig: Der Rat der Zehn möge die 25-jährige Verbannung des inzwischen verarmten Venezianers aus der Vaterstadt beenden. Während des Wartens trifft Casanova seinen im bescheidenen Wohlstand lebenden Freund Olivo. Dessen Gattin Amalia, nun Mutter von drei jungen Mädchen, hatte der Verführer einst besessen. Amalia liebt Casanova immer noch und will von ihm genommen werden. Der Ankömmling möchte aber die junge Marcolina, eine blutjunge Nichte Olivos, besitzen. Amalia will dem ehemaligen Geliebten das ausreden. Der junge schöne Leutnant Lorenzi sei Marcolinas Liebhaber. Casanova weiß es besser. Lorenzi hat von Marcolina einen Korb bekommen. Das Mädchen studiert in Bologna Mathematik und verbringt die Ferien bei den Verwandten. Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) war ein österreichischer Erzähler und Dramatiker. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der Wiener Moderne. Schnitzler schrieb Dramen und Prosa, in denen er das Augenmerk vor allem auf die psychischen Vorgänge seiner Figuren lenkt. Gleichzeitig mit dem Einblick in das Innenleben der Schnitzlerschen Figuren bekommt der Leser auch ein Bild von der Gesellschaft, die diese Gestalten und ihr Seelenleben prägt.
