This is the first book in the new series, The Carrot Top Kids Mysteries. The redheaded sisters, Dani and Lana, are now in middle school and part of the mystery-solving Zoo Crew made up of their best friends. Their middle school, Westover Hills, has one of two live mascots in the District. Their mascot is the Fighting Falcons, and Mr. Jones, the falconer, who cares for Winged Knight II, also known as Deuce. Students at the rival middle school, Northview Heights, whose mascot is the Golden Gopher, conspire with a Westover Hills student to steal Deuce. They hatch a plot with the help of Mr. Jones, who has been told he’s too old to be the falconer and must retire, to steal Deuce before the big football game between the two schools. One day near the beginning of the school year, the school’s mascot, Deuce, the peregrine falcon, goes missing! The Zoo Crew gets the assignment to find the mascot. The Zoo Crew goes into action to investigate and eventually finds the school mascot in the most unexpected of locations.
