A caries vaccine is an experimental vaccine aimed at preventing dental cavities (caries) by targeting the bacteria responsible for tooth decay, particularly Streptococcus mutans. This bacterium is a primary contributor to plaque formation and acid production that leads to tooth enamel demineralization. The vaccine works by stimulating the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that can neutralize S. mutans or block its ability to adhere to the tooth surface, thus preventing the initial steps of cavity formation.Research is ongoing, and while promising, caries vaccines are not yet available for public use. Challenges remain in developing a vaccine that can be both effective and safe for widespread use, especially since dental caries is influenced by various factors such as diet, oral hygiene, and genetics. However, the development of such vaccines could potentially revolutionize dental care and significantly reduce the global burden of tooth decay.
