A maior parte das reservas mundiais de petróleo provém de uma melhor exploração de campos já conhecidos, através de métodos cada vez mais sofisticados. As reservas recuperáveis são, portanto, estimadas em função dos diferentes modos de exploração dos campos. Tendo em conta esta evolução, cada empresa petrolífera deve conhecer em pormenor a arquitetura interna dos seus reservatórios subterrâneos. Para tal, a identificação do facies litológico de um reservatório permite-nos efetuar as perfurações em locais porosos e menos argilosos. A identificação do litofacies é a primeira tarefa a realizar para a caracterização do reservatório. O litofacies consiste numa descrição das diferentes formações geológicas que compõem um poço. Para resolver os nossos problemas mais complexos, precisamos de ir além das técnicas matemáticas padrão. Como alternativa, precisamos de complementar os métodos de análise convencionais com várias metodologias que estão atualmente a emergir, nomeadamente a inteligência artificial. Este livro relata e contribui para investigar as potencialidades das novas técnicas conexionistas na caracterização de reservatórios.
