O presente livro surgiu do interesse em transformar uma pesquisa básica num trabalho de conclusão de curso de mestrado, como fonte de consulta elementar sobre a saúde mental dos agentes penitenciários.Dentre as psicopatologias relacionadas ao trabalho de agentes penitenciários, destacam-se como principais os Transtornos de Estresse, Síndrome de Burnout, Síndrome do Pânico, entre outras.No campo laboral, o estresse é um dos principais desencadeadores de sofrimento. A Síndrome de Burnout caracteriza-se pelo esgotamento físico e emocional, insatisfação pessoal, passando a pessoa a apresentar comportamento agressivo e irritadiço (Pereira, 2002).O Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático e o Transtorno de Estresse Agudo vão se caracterizar pela presença de um estressor externo, com a exposição ou vivência de episódio traumático (França, 1996). A Síndrome do Pânico, por sua vez, é um transtorno de ansiedade e diferencia-se das demais condições mentais pelos ataques inesperados e recorrentes, com crises acompanhadas de alguns sintomas específicos como medo, desconforto no peito, despersonalização, sensação de falta de ar, entre outros (SCARPATO, 2001).
