Assim, para possuir capital social, uma pessoa tem de estar relacionada com outras, e são essas outras pessoas que constituem a verdadeira fonte da sua vantagem. Estas ligações sociais que as pessoas têm nas suas comunidades estão a ser alvo de um interesse crescente na investigação em saúde pública, devido ao interesse crescente pelos determinantes sociais da saúde. Este interesse radica no potencial das ligações sociais das pessoas para reduzir as desigualdades no domínio da saúde através da mobilização de recursos na sociedade para facilitar o acesso ao capital social. Acredita-se também que melhora a capacidade das comunidades para trabalharem em conjunto na resolução de problemas de saúde colectiva. A investigação sobre saúde oral não é tão extensa como a relacionada com a saúde geral.Esta literatura de investigação fornece uma série de pontos de partida para o desenvolvimento de hipóteses sobre as vias entre as redes e relações comunitárias, por um lado, e a saúde, por outro.
