Tijdens zijn studententijd, schreef Nicolaas Beets, als ’Hildebrand’, de Camera Obscura (1839), een boek zo populair dat het al tijdens zijn leven 22 drukken beleefde en tot ver in de 20e eeuw gelezen werd (totaal ruim 70 herdrukken en bewerkingen). Beets beschrijft de 19e eeuwse burgermilieus op rake, humoristische wijze maar - ongebruikelijk voor die tijd - zonder gemoraliseer. Passages over ons onbekende 19e eeuwse kledingstukken (sluitjas, buis, eva), en voorwerpen (wie weet nog wat kortswijl is of een evenveeltje?), verslagen van interieurs en tradities worden afgewisseld met eigentijds aandoende observaties: 'Mijn leeren is spelen wil er bij niet één kind in'. De familie Stastok en het ’onaangenaam mensch in de Haarlemmer Hout’ zijn nog steeds herkenbare typen en zeer de moeite van een hernieuwde kennismaking waard.NICOLAAS BEETS (1814-1903) was een Nederlandse predikant, hoogleraar, auteur en dichter bekend onder het pseudoniem HILDEBRAND. Camera Obscura was zijn bekendste werk. Andere werken zijn: José (1834), Kuser (1835) en Guy de Vlaming (1837). In 1840 werd Beets predikant aan de Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in Heemstede, en hij was hoogleraar in de kerkgeschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Utrecht van 1874 tot 1884.
