'Call It Sleep - A View on the Jewish-American Immigrant Experience' tratta il tema dell’utilizzo di un’opera di narrativa come fonte storica e se questa fonte possa essere letta come rappresentativa delle esperienze umane in un certo periodo di tempo; in questo caso Ellis Island, New York, dal 1881 al 1924. Partendo dall’esperienza degli immigrati ebrei tra il 1881 e il 1924, l’attenzione si concentra sui giovani figli degli immigrati. Questi bambini erano spesso nati in un Paese ma cresciuti in un altro, e in seguito a ciò sperimentarono una scissione tra i vecchi valori dei genitori e i nuovi valori incontrati in America mentre andavano a scuola o giocavano per strada con i loro amici della stessa età. Molti di questi bambini si sono spostati al di là della lingua yiddish e della sfera religiosa dei loro genitori.
