The road trip is the prayer. California Prayer conveys the beauty of a false paradise, one we acknowledge is imperfect, but a finer place than the one we accept. Though applied here in a secular frame, a prayer is always honest. Pursuing true love, deliverance from addiction and the crossroads of identity and place perch on the fingertips and tongue of the poems within. Like a road trip, a prayer is not conceived by a preacher or a church - it is something personal, and comforting...and, while harmless, is ultimately futile. But, same as a journey with a destination but no map, something is learned, something is answered with no conceivable source. The road trip is the prayer. The poems in Other Poems 2010-2016 represent various styles and experiments in both experiencing and studying the importance of family history, identity, abstract and surreal memory and the timelessness of travel. They wind through a pivotal period of the author’s life, attempting to reveal his authenticity as poet and human-being, and how they intersect.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

At its core, The Half-Breed Horse Thief is a poetic memoir, non-linear in its landscape of experience and fragmented memories. A disparaging term made poetic, the title represents someone from a mixed background who, so to find themselves within disparate cultures without inheritance, must become a bandit, a punk, must steal by adapting, moving chameleon-like between houses, st...
