Este ensayo intenta ofrecer una respuesta a través del análisis de la obra literaria de Paul Celan (1920-1970), el mayor poeta en lengua alemana del siglo XX. Celan vivió simultáneamente dos vidas literarias: escribió poesía exclusivamente en alemán, pero tradujo al alemán de muchos idiomas: inglés, francés, ruso, italiano, hebreo y portugués. Este ensayo examina la biblioteca personal de Celan, pero también su fascinación por la teoría de la traducción de Walter Benjamin y la historia del misticismo judío de Gershom Scholem. Celan estableció una alianza poética entre cábala y traducción, combinando la idea de una lengua sagrada con la de una lengua pura. Esta alianza tenía un objetivo supremo: redimir la lengua alemana de su trágico pasado: el haber sido el idioma del nacionalsocialismo. 10
