内容简介这是一本日本纪实文学。在日本，'父母格差'一词主要指家庭教育环境差距，作者认为日本当下已经进入了从'能力主义'向'父母格差'社会转型的时代，而'父母的财富'和'父母的教育愿望'决定了儿童的教育背景以及未来的社会地位。书中，作者从学生、家长、学校和教育行政部门这三个角度入手，选取多个案例，分析了日本如何成为一个父母格差国家，并提出不少发人深思的洞见。作者认为，从家庭环境来说，教育资本由经济资本、文化资本、社会关系资本三者构成。一方面，虽然财富对教育有极大影响，但并非有钱的家长就一定能给到孩子最好的教育环境，文化教育程度较高的家庭即使没有太多的金钱投入，也能从自身素质出发给孩子好的影响，其相对宽松的环境也有利于子女身心健康成长；另一方面，作者针对自身任教的大阪大学的学生做了深度调查，考察了不同家庭背景出身的学生是如何进入国内顶级高校，并如何看待家庭教育对其自身的影响。从教育行政角度，也考察了新自由主义政策对高校教育的影响，并提出重新规划教育目标和实现教育公正转型所需的若干措施。
