这是许良英先生（1920.5.3.~2013.1.28.）的自传。 内容止于1958年他离京回浙江临海张家渡劳改前，所以只能称作半部自传。与多数传记不同，这本自传着重描写了作者的思想成长和变化过程。 自传初稿于1968-1969年在文革期间被隔离审查时完成，1970年重写。 但是随着思想的彻底转变，他意识到需再次修订。 1989年六四事件后，中国重新进入'红色恐怖'时期。 他被列入中共安全部门发布的109人黑名单中的第二位（第一位是方励之），遭到软禁，许多计划被打断或终止。 他借此时间重新反思并于1993年完成此半部自传。在他生命的最后20年里，许良英专注于撰写《民主的历史》，以推动中国的民主与人权启 蒙运动。他原计划在完成这一重要工作后，继续撰写后半生的自传。然而，直到去世，他未能启 动后续的写作。为了使读者能更完整地了解他的一生，本书中增加了几份附录，包括分别完稿于2008年和2009年的许先生撰写的两篇回忆文章以及许良英年谱和部分编、译、著作目录。
