En el siglo XII el Budismo coreano se escindió en dos grandes corrientes: la escuela Hwaon, que favorecía los estudios textuales y tendía a elaborar complejas teorías sobre la obtención de la budeidad; y la escuela Son (Chan en chino y Zen en japonés), cuyos practicantes se entregaban a la meditación y rechazaban cualquier análisis de tipo teórico. No fue hasta la aparición del gran maestro Chinul (1158-1210) que el budismo coreano adquirió su propia identidad, gracias a su enseñanza de unir la práctica meditativa con el estudio de los textos canónicos. Chinul estableció la armonización de la progresión gradual en el sendero budista y la visión de la iluminación súbita propia del chan chino. Los aportes de Chinul no sólo son relevantes para el Budismo coreano, sino que lo fue también po la luz que arroja sobre la filosofía Mahayana en general. La obra recorre losorígenes del Budismo coreano, destaca la enseñanza de Chinul y penetra en las experiencias y corrientes más actuales del Budismo coreano contemporáneo.
