In de meer dan 30 jaar dat Jan Dael (1957) in de verslavingszorg werkt heeft hij honderden gesprekken gevoerd met patiënten. Een onderdeel van de behandeling kan zijn dat de verslaafde een brief schrijft. Een brief aan de verslaving, hun 'kleine ik', hun kinderen en/of hun ouders. Niet per se bedoeld om te versturen, maar om de emoties die steeds weggestopt zijn door middelen open te leggen en daar over te gaan praten en delen. Het zijn brieven uit het hart geschreven en Jan was daar erg van onder de indruk. Daarom besloot hij in overleg met de schrijvers een heel aantal van deze brieven te bundelen in dit boekje 'Brieven van herstel'. Het geeft een inkijkje in de ziel van de verslaafde, soms verhelderend, heel kwetsbaar en steeds weer ontroerend.
