This briefing paper provides an overview of trends in jail privatization as evident in the following models: private management, development of a facility by the private sector, and private sector services provision. The author summarizes pro and con arguments, growth trends and the current extent of privatization in jails.Appendix A presents policy statements on corrections privatization from the American Jail Association, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the American Bar Association, the American Correctional Association, and the National Sheriffs’ Association. Appendix B lists state legislative statutes pertaining to corrections privatization.Appendix C provides a list of privately operated correctional facilities.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
