Breve historia de los neandertales presenta a la especie Homo neanderthalensis, los primeros humanos fósiles descubiertos por la ciencia a mediados del siglo XIX. Este trabajo hace un recorrido ameno y riguroso por lo que actualmente se conoce sobre los neandertales. Comienza repasando la historia de su descubrimiento en la sociedad decimonónica occidental y la sorpresa que este extraño humano causó a los eruditos de la época, para profundizar seguidamente en su origen, a través de la especie Homo heidelbergensis en la compleja Europa de la Edad del Hielo, sus características físicas y ciclos vitales, sus modos de vida y subsistencia, sus relaciones sociales, logros cognitivos (lenguaje, arte, trascendencia), la llegada de los sapiens a su mundo y su dramático fin.
