Boredom may be an ordinary problem of ourmodern, fast-paced, technological time. What isboredom for a group of adults now in recovery fromsubstance use disorder, who now also have HIV/AIDS?The dissertation study on which the book is basedaimed to answer this question. Boredom wasrevealed to be more than a seemingly harmlessphenomenon that persists decades into recovery.Boredom seems less harmful with the achievement ofmeaningfulness in life, but it remains dangerous toadults once dependent on psychoactive substances andsex. Surprisingly, boredom can be helpful to an adultwith HIV/AIDS. The importance of avoiding boredom wasuniversally reported by the eight interviewees,however. The challenge for professionals working withadults in recovery from substance use disorder, whoalso have HIV/AIDS, is to help clients balance theneed to keep very busy with rote activities, againstthe need to find new meaningful andengaging occupations.
