Bonding didn’t begin with theory, it began with a simple observation. In 1955, Buonocore found that phosphoric acid could roughen enamel just enough for resin to grip it, and that small discovery opened up an entire field. From there we trace how adhesion actually works: an adhesive is only as good as its ability to wet a surface and creep into its microscopic roughness, which is why enamel, hard and mineral-rich, bonds so easily while dentin, wet and collagen-heavy, remains the harder problem. Nakabayashi’s 1982 discovery of the hybrid layer where resin locks into demineralized dentin sits at the center of it all, both the reason dentin bonding works and its most fragile point. We follow bonding agents through eight generations, each simplifying the process while chasing stronger, more reliable adhesion, arriving at today’s universal adhesives that bond to enamel, zirconia, metal, and ceramic alike. Clinical chapters ground this in crowns, veneers, and bridges, and in why bonds fail. We close looking ahead to bioactive and nano-enhanced adhesives materials built not just to stick, but to protect and repair.
