Jeb Stuart Johnston is a smart and successful trial lawyer practicing in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes. Due to his own bad luck he is assigned a murder case because of a conflict with the public defender’s office. He must represent Angelique Armond, the sister of the alleged trigger man, Bobby Armond.Angelique is young, beautiful, and vulnerable and Jeb’s old world sense of southern chivalry and his physical attraction to her leads him down a path he would have never considered before. Jeb wants to be her hero and protector and soon finds himself under her spell. He vows that he will do whatever it takes, legal or not, to beat the charges against her so he can have her for himself. As the defense of the charges develops and the trial unfolds it becomes clear that Angelique is not what she appears to be. Unfortunately, Jeb is too far gone with his love and desire for her to change directions and must play out the hand that he has helped deal.

Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...

I’d been working the joint long enough to know the makeup probably hid bruises, burns, or cuts, inflicted by the men who came in and out of her life, whiskey scars I think they called them. I also saw a thin scar running through the eyebrow over her left...
