The necessary isolation, imposed by the pandemic during a good part of the writing of this book, presented Jean-Yves Solinga with apparently the same situation as Michel Eyquem Sieur de Montaigne, one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance, who had locked himself in one of his towers, away from society [away from humans] to study.... to better understand the human mind in its social settings! He 'retired early' from life after a successful social and political life to work on his 'essais'. He wanted to delve into human nature and its universal traits (if any). Montaigne is who came to the author’s mind when his topics dealt with larger subjects: 'What is it that we can learn that IS universal in each of us?' Not that we are not wonderfully different: but rather that there are nuggets of the universal in each of us... Not unlike human DNA, the basic origin of our being. Our DNA has made and still makes all of us (at least until some scientific lab comes up with alternatives).'Here I was... all alone for months, writing about women... men... as social animals.'Jean-Yves uses religious artifacts and references to build antithetical contrasts with the fleshy amoral present. His poetry continues his wanderings between another two poles, two concepts: The fragile, ephemeral weight of human thought and the enormity of the stuff of the universe. This book is the result of Jean-Yves’ observations, which, like Montaigne, often go from the particular to the universal.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. FOREWORD:  It is a rare occurrence indeed when a publisher begins to write a foreword to the Eleventh book, not least full-length book of poetry, from the same author. Such is the case with Jean-Yves Solinga’s book, Rage and Passion.    The cover and title of any book, more so with a book of poetry, often brings together aspects of an author’s collective thought processes, conc...

“Created Realities” is Jean-Yves’ ninth book of poetry to savor. In it he revisits the fundamental issue of “reality,” as created by the artist from fragments of the day-to-day mundane life that we all live and exist within; from pieces of text accidentally read; from long lost memories; from casual conversations or merely witnessed while shopping for tomorrows dinner. The imag...
