A biotecnologia industrial pode produzir uma vasta gama de produtos (químicos, materiais, alimentos e bebidas, biocombustíveis e biofármacos) a partir de matérias-primas de base biológica. Pode reduzir o impacto ambiental ao utilizar a biomassa como alternativa aos recursos fósseis para o fabrico de bioprodutos, biocombustíveis e biopolímeros.Através do desenvolvimento de técnicas de fermentação e da utilização e conceção de novos bioreactores, bem como de técnicas de engenharia genética, conseguimos obter produtos que têm um enorme impacto económico na indústria, uma vez que são menos dispendiosos e mais amigos do ambiente do que os seus homólogos fabricados por síntese química.A biotecnologia industrial aumenta a produtividade, utilizando menos recursos (água e produtos químicos tradicionais) e menos energia. Reduz as emissões (incluindo os gases com efeito de estufa) e diminui a utilização de combustíveis fósseis. Também gera menos resíduos e é uma ferramenta essencial para o tratamento e reutilização de resíduos.
