In der grünen Biotechnologie befassen sich die Forscher mit Inhalten wie zum Beispiel: der Verbesserung von Nutzpflanzen, der Gewinnung von pflanzlichen Inhaltsstoffen oder Fasern sowie der Erschließung von Wirkprinzipien für andere Anwendungsbereiche.Ein Teilgebiet der grünen Biotechnologie, welches oben nicht erwähnt wurde, ist die Geobiotechnologie. Die Vorsilbe 'Geo' bezeichnet die Gewinnung sowie die Lagerung von organischen und anorganischen Rohstoffen, darunter auch Metalle. Dabei steuern die Mikroorganismen (meistens Bakterien) einen großen Teil der natürlichen biogeochemischen Stoffkreisläufe.
