Uma análise superficial da evolução histórica da bioética como disciplina revela o surgimento de algumas tendências, como o advento da busca pela caracterização regional, dando origem a perspetivas bioéticas culturalmente enraizadas. A maioria dos estudos existentes nesta área académica apresenta a bioética como se fosse um campo de investigação que é prerrogativa do mundo ocidental, dominado pelas idiossincrasias e excentricidades ocidentais. Há também a perspetiva de que a bioética africana é um mito; uma perspetiva que é reforçada pela classificação ideológica racial, pelo tráfico de escravos e pelo colonialismo. Kanu, neste livro, desafia essa perspetiva, defendendo a existência de uma bioética africana, para o reforço da autenticidade e identidade africanas.
