Billtry: A Parody on Trilby is a satirical novel written by Mary Kyle Dallas and published in 1895. The book is a parody of the popular novel Trilby by George du Maurier, which had been published just a few years earlier. The story follows the adventures of Billtry, a young woman who becomes the muse and model for a group of artists in Paris. Like Trilby, Billtry is hypnotized by the sinister Svengali, who uses her to further his own artistic ambitions. However, unlike in the original novel, the characters in Billtry are exaggerated and caricatured, and the story is filled with comedic twists and turns.Throughout the book, Dallas pokes fun at the pretentiousness and self-importance of the art world, as well as the romanticization of bohemian life in Paris. The novel also satirizes the gender roles of the time, with Billtry subverting traditional expectations of femininity and Svengali embodying the worst stereotypes of the controlling and manipulative male artist.Overall, Billtry: A Parody on Trilby is a witty and irreverent take on a popular literary trend of the late 19th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
