詩歌是人類最早的文學。遠在漁獵時代，當原始人獵到獵物時，不禁就歡呼起來，此時不禁會加上一些歡樂的語言，而有音感的人也會加上些同韻的字，成為最早的詩。幾乎所有民族都有詩，可以說世界詩歌的重要主流是中國詩及西洋詩─例如，日本的詩大都脫胎於中國詩。詩是最簡潔的表達情感的文學，中外古今都一樣。在念一首詩的時候，讀者要能在詩句的字裡行間，把沒有寫出的散文字句在腦中填出。能做到這一點的就是好詩。這就是說，詩最注重的是如何把情感表達出來（如中國諺語所說的「詩情畫意」）。可是在人類早期文化中，大多數的人民都是文盲，因此出現了一個行業：吟遊詩人。他們把這些情感的表達，甚至於故事，都以消遣性的吟唱成歌給人民做娛樂。如果歌詞押韻，聽起來更為悅耳，因此建立了詩的押韻的傳統，古今中外都一樣。本書集結69首中西方著名詩詞並加以翻譯，是認識詩詞文學的輔助教材。
