Diese Notwendigkeit ist insbesondere gegeben, da eine wachsende Anzahl international agierender Konzerne an den globalen Kapitalmärkten um Finanzmittel konkurrieren und sich somit einem gleichen Investorenkreis ausgesetzt sehen. Diesem Anspruch der internationalen Kapitalmarktorientierung versucht die Rechnungslegung nach International Financial Reporting Standards (im Folgenden IFRS genannt) nachzukommen, um Investoren so in ihrer Anlageentscheidung zu unterstützen. Ein wichtiger Grundsatz der IFRS ist demzufolge der Grundsatz der Vergleichbarkeit, welcher einen zeitlichen und einen zwischenbetrieblichen Aspekt verfolgt. Im Rahmen des IFRS 3 wurde nunmehr '(...)ein Wahlrecht zwischen einem beteiligungsproportionalen Ausweis des erworbenen Geschäfts- und Firmenwertes und der full goodwill method kodifiziert.'
