We had already ridden on trails in 15 to 20 states before deciding to make it a goal to ride trails in all 50 states. That goal was reached on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, in September, 2023.

We rode our own bicycles in most states while choosing to rent in just five states: Alaska, The Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho), and Hawaii. The bicycles we rented were all of a proper fit and comfortable.

As we reflect on all the trails we have ridden, we thoroughly enjoyed most of them. In many of the states, we have ridden multiple trails. And in some of the states, our rides were multi-day events, during which we secured hotels along the way. There were very few flat tires or bicycle repairs needed. We do remember the one day we endured two flat tires. Luckily, this day happened near a city with bicycle repair shops within a short distance.

Meeting lots of interesting people on the trails meant learning about the area in which we were riding. We could then visit the sites and attractions most beloved by the residents. On a lot of the trails, we also met other travelers not familiar with the area. That also meant for interesting conversations about the places of their residences. What a blessing it has been to complete this journey.

In 2004 our youngest graduated from high school. Bob and I got the bicycles down. We were empty nesters. What wonderful times we have enjoyed while riding trails in many states since the fall of 2004. All varieties of ’rigs’, from recumbent to high wheelers, can be seen on the trails. A rider will see many sights, hear many sounds and smell many smells (good and bad), much of w...
