Derart verheillungsvolle Ankiindigungen sind seit 1984, seitdem die Sozialwissenschaft iiber das Ende der Arbeitsteilung diskutiert, eher selten geworden. Dennoch ist die so­ zialwissenschaftliche Diskussion der Zukunft der Arbeit nicht von zunehmender Abge­ kliirtheit sondem eher von neu belebtem Erkenntnis-und Analyseinteresse gepriigt. Brei­ te, Tiefe und Heterogenitiit der Interpretation und Erkenntnisse zum Verhaltnis von Ar­ beit, Technik und Gesellschaft haben zugenommen und die Industriesoziologie auf die Analyse und Erklii. rnng von uneinheitlichen und nicht-linearen Entwicklungstendenzen verpflichtet, deren Uniibersichtlichkeit, Widerspriichlichkeit und Optionalitiit neue An­ forderungen an Theorie, Methode wie Analyse stellen. Angesichts des paradigmatischen Wandels sozialwissenschaftlichen Technikverstiindnis­ ses besteht AnlaB fUr die Erwartung, daB diese zunehmende Kontingenz, Pluralitiit und Diversifikation des Forschungsgegenstandes als wissenschaftliche Herausforderung aner­ kannt und nicht als 'postmodeme Inkommensurabilitiit' ausgespart wird. Nachdem bis in die siebziger Jahre 'technischer Fortschritt als Motor sozialen Fort­ schritts' und bis Mitte der achtziger Jahre insbesondere die negativen Folgen des 'tech­ nischen Wandels' untersucht wurden, verliert in der fachintemen Technikdiskussion Technik zunehmend an positiv oder negativ konnotiertem Subjektcharakter. Die Analyse heterogener und widerspriichlicher Technikfolgen zum einen und das Leitbild von der 'Technisierung als sozialer Prozefi' zum anderen gewinnt an Bedeutung. Die damit in den Vordergrund geriickte Interdependenz von Technik und Gesellschaft impliziert eine Orientierung auf die vielfaltigen Wechselbeziehungen zwischen technischen Systemen, sozialem Handeln und menschlichen Verhaltensweisen und somit eine (Riick-)Besinnung auf originar sozialwissenschaftliche Analyse(-gegenstiinde).
