Sie wurden bereits verwendet, als die Notwendigkeit bestand, die Reibung zwischen zwei Parteien zu verringern. Um den heutigen Stand dieses Produkts zu erreichen, haben mehrere Entwicklungen stattgefunden, und einer der wichtigsten und schwierigsten Punkte ist heute die Kontrolle der Entsorgung von gebrauchtem Schmieröl, OLUC. Die meisten der befragten Unternehmen entsorgen zwischen 51 und 100 Litern Öl pro Monat und verkaufen zwischen 21 und 50 Litern pro Monat. Von den befragten Unternehmen gaben 84 % an, dass sie ihre Betriebe inspizieren, wobei es jedoch keine feste Häufigkeit gibt. Was die Lagerung anbelangt, so verwenden 52 % Metallbehälter zur Aufbewahrung von OLUC und 40 % Kunststoffbehälter. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auch, dass 93 % der Unternehmen die Abfälle ordnungsgemäß entsorgen, indem sie sie von der Müllabfuhr abholen lassen, während 7 % der Befragten zugeben, sie an Dritte zu verkaufen.
