Aufgrund der großen Nachfrage von Erwachsenen nach einer kürzeren kieferorthopädischen Behandlungszeit konzentrieren sich die Forscher heutzutage verstärkt auf Methoden zur Beschleunigung der Zahnbewegung. Außerdem bringt eine lange kieferorthopädische Behandlungszeit mehrere Nachteile mit sich, darunter eine höhere Anfälligkeit für Karies, Zahnfleischrückgang und Wurzelresorption sowie eine geringere Mitarbeit des Patienten. Es wurden mehrere Versuche unternommen, sowohl präklinisch als auch klinisch verschiedene Ansätze zu entwickeln, um schnellere Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Allerdings gibt es bei den meisten dieser Techniken noch viele Unklarheiten und unbeantwortete Fragen.
