'Beowulf' is an epic poem in Old English, dating back to the 8th to 11th century. It tells the story of Beowulf, a Geatish hero who comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of Denmark, whose mead hall in Heorot is being attacked by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf defeats Grendel, Grendel’s mother attacks the hall, and Beowulf vanquishes her as well. Returning home to Geatland, Beowulf eventually becomes king and, in his old age, faces a dragon. He defeats the dragon but is mortally wounded in the battle. The poem explores themes of heroism, courage, loyalty, and the struggle between good and evil. As a cornerstone of Anglo-Saxon literature, 'Beowulf' provides invaluable insights into the culture, values, and worldview of early medieval England. This timeless epic continues to captivate readers with its vivid imagery, thrilling battles, and profound reflections on the human condition. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
