From the moment Bernard nearly runs over a little girl, his life unravels. He hurries to find her, but the girl has completely disappeared. Then, she shows up in his dreams, and he feels her gentle presence during the day. He tells nobody lest they think him mad. Until he meets Albert, a retired gardener, and discovers the girl was actually killed during World War II. When his wife, Anne, becomes pregnant, Bernard cannot bear the idea of a real child as he is so absorbed with the little girl who haunts him. Unable to confide in Anne, his marriage disintegrates, he reaches the breaking point and flees, leaving everyone shocked at his disappearance.Pulled back to where the little girl lived, Bernard stays with Albert, in whom he can confide. Things change and Bernard takes to the road, living rough and working where he can, still unable to face his previous life. Years pass and faithful friends find him in hospital, unwittingly bringing him a joyous surprise he could never have imagined. 3
