En una volanta amarilla de persianas verdes, enfundado en su sombrero de ala ancha, el Obispo de Espada combate los males que aquejan a la iglesia más poderosa y corrupta de América en pleno siglo XIX. Por su parte, el doctor Tomás Romay y el padre Félix Varela serán compañeros de avatares del prelado a favor de la educación pública y de su lucha contra las enfermedades, el racismo y la ilegalidad manifiesta en la que se mueven algunos miembros eclesiásticos. El conde de O´Donnell, quien representa el espíritu más retrógrado de ese período, es el antagonista que intenta poner a Espada contra la pared. En los almendrones (taxis privados) se monta el que puede y no el que quiere. Así está la ciudad de ahora mismo, donde Lola Alegría, Alejandro, Sandra, Marina, Leonid y muchos otros luchan por el día a día de la manera que sea. Lenguaje duro en ocasiones, sexo explícito, marginalidad a ultranza y una violencia perturbadora se adueñan de La Habana contemporánea. Nada aquí es lo que parece. Es mucho peor.
