O bem-estar psicológico é uma preocupação crucial dos idosos. São muitos os factores que compõem este bem-estar.O principal objetivo deste estudo foi examinar a situação do bem-estar psicológico dos idosos (60-89 anos) e os possíveis factores existenciais (envolvimento religioso, espiritualidade e sentido pessoal da vida) e demográficos (sexo, idade e educação) que afectam essa situação. Foram recolhidos dados de 329 idosos (162 do sexo masculino e 167 do sexo feminino) na cidade de Dessie, através de um questionário e de discussões em grupo com 3 grupos de idosos. Os resultados indicaram que a maioria dos idosos tinha uma pontuação moderada e superior a moderada na autoestima e na autonomia. Além disso, um número razoável de idosos tinha uma pontuação moderada e elevada na depressão. De acordo com os resultados da discussão dos grupos de centragem, os rendimentos, os problemas de saúde e o apoio social são factores importantes que afectam o bem-estar psicológico dos idosos.
