Belshazzar

'Belshazzar a Tale of the Fall of Babylon' is a gripping historical novel that transports readers to the final days of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Set against the backdrop of one of history’s most dramatic transitions of power, the story follows the decadence and eventual downfall of King Belshazzar as the forces of Cyrus the Great close in on the legendary city. William Stearns Davis masterfully blends biblical tradition with historical scholarship to recreate the atmosphere of ancient Mesopotamia, from the splendor of the Hanging Gardens to the tension within the palace walls. The narrative explores themes of pride, prophecy, and the inevitable shift of empires, featuring prominent figures such as the prophet Daniel and the Persian conqueror Cyrus. As the famous writing on the wall appears, the fate of a civilization hangs in the balance. This work serves as both an educational glimpse into the ancient world and a compelling drama of political intrigue and spiritual reckoning. It remains a classic example of historical storytelling, offering a vivid and immersive portrayal of the clash between the Babylonian and Persian worlds. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
