Una quarantina di articoli e racconti brevi, che inizia con un episodio del 1400 riguardante i 'Longobardi di Cirvoi', e termina nel 2008, con le testimonianze e le riflessioni dei parlamentari bellunesi Orsini, Neri, De Paoli e Crema sulla politica di ieri e oggi. Al centro vi sono le cronache del passato, in particolare del Ventennio fascista, con le visite a Belluno di Starace, il famoso discorso 'Burro o cannoni' di Mussolini.Fatti che avrebbero anche potuto cambiare il corso della grande storia. Come il cosiddetto incontro di Feltre tra i due dittatori Hitler e Mussolini, con il retroscena del progetto dell’attentato il che non ci fu, raccontato da Armando Bettiol, uno dei protagonisti della vicenda.
