Béléko is een levendig Sahel-dorp in het West-Afrikaanse land Mali. Dit aantrekkelijke plaatsje, met een kleurrijke markt en traditi onele bouwsti jlen, is gelegen in een vlak landschap met grote, karaktervolle bomen. In dit platt elandsdorp kruisen de paden van Nederlandse ontwikkelingssamenwerkers, Franse missionarissen en Malinese ambtenaren elkaar, evenals die van gezondheidswerkers, landbouwers, dorpsvrouwen en hun kinderen. Gevormd door hun verschillende achtergronden en met hun eigen hartstochten en persoonlijke strijd, beïnvloeden de hoofdpersonen op intrigerende en beslissende wijze elkaars levens. Ook de Afrikaanse voorouders en duistere krachten spelen een belangrijke rol in het dagelijkse dorpsbestaan. Voor de Nederlandse Hanne en Hugo neemt hun verblijf in dit bijzondere dorp een geheel onverwachte wending. De gebeurtenissen in dit boeiende verhaal spelen zich af in de eind 80’er jaren en geven een unieke kijk op het bijzondere dorpsleven en de Malinese cultuur en natuur van die ti jd.
