Sobre IBD

Elizabeth Keckley’s Behind the Scenes is a remarkable memoir of resilience, talent, and proximity to history. Born into slavery, Keckley worked tirelessly to purchase her freedom and later became a successful dressmaker in Washington, D.C. Her skill and discretion eventually led her to serve as personal modiste and confidante to Mary Todd Lincoln. In this candid account, Keckley reflects on her years in bondage, her journey to independence, and her experiences inside the White House during the Lincoln presidency. She offers rare insight into the personal struggles of the First Family during the Civil War.Poignant and dignified, this memoir is both a powerful personal narrative and an important historical document. It’s essential reading for anyone interested in American history, perseverance, and voices that refused to be silenced.
