O BPN é definido pela OMS como qualquer nascimento vivo de uma criança com peso inferior a 2500 g. Inclui também os recém-nascidos cujo peso à nascença é inferior ao percentil 10 da curva de lubchenco ou um peso inferior a dois desvios-padrão.De acordo com a OMS, 17% das crianças nascem com menos de 2500g nos países industrializados e 90% nos países em desenvolvimento. Na República Democrática do Congo, o relatório Lubumbashi e o DHS 2013 e 2014 representam 9%.Os objectivos deste estudo são determinar a frequência de recém-nascidos com BPN e identificar os factores associados à morbilidade e mortalidade associadas ao BPN. Realizámos um estudo documental retrospetivo na maternidade de Kintambo de janeiro de 2017 a janeiro de 2018. A população do estudo consistiu em todas as parturientes que deram à luz recém-nascidos com BPN na maternidade do Kintambo e todos os recém-nascidos com BPN incluídos no estudo.
