Observation DeckStanding on this deck I look down and observe. This deck is high above the lives of my friendsAt times I feel higher than all human kindI stand alone humbled in this crowdAs the crowd separates Between the entertainersAnd the lonersI stand back and observe. Perched above on this lonely deck, I wonder if I learn more from this distanceSeparation, separating myself from the world'They' all learn from their mistakes. From me they take and takeI observe like I’m on a deck. From above looking down. I so want to look up instead of downEven if I have to jump off this deckPosition my arms close to my eyes and just diveDive into the rest of the worldAll it’s insecurityBy now I should have learned my way aroundOr like Grenouillelearned my smell aroundBy now I should be able to stand on my own cloudPour myself out and share with the crowd. This collection of dark, brooding poetry explores poet Joseph Saunders’s journey from boy to man over the course of a decade. Love, betrayal, beauty, and danger combine in an eclectic mix of words and emotions that compel you to delve into your soul.

The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...
