Bryan Lee Butler is a young attorney practicing law in Miami and later in Palm Beach, Florida. He returned from a stint as a US Navy pilot and graduated from the University of Florida Law School. In Haiti he handles the sale of the Casino National Haitian, Haiti’s only Casino, and returns to Miami. Having fallen out with Laura, his original love, he moves to Palm Beach where he practices law as a prosecutor. He loses his wife and child to a murder. Charged with the murders he flees with a Dominican friend to the Eastern Caribbean BWI where he hides until he is cleared. He marries Margaret, a prosecutor from his office. When he is about to lose his job because of a change of political winds, he returns to Miami to again work with his mentor, Big Jim Rowe, in a three man law firm. He discovers Margaret’s infidelity with the newly elected State Attorney, just as he is beginning work on a multi million dollar development in the Florida Keys. His mentor, the law firm head, now a billionaire, provides him with a $300 million loan and the deed to a 55 acre piece of Key Largo for a development that will make history. He re-captures his love for Laura. Alzheimer’s afflicts his mentor who sails a small boat to the Bahamas and is lost. Bryan flies his own plane all over the Caribbean looking for Big Jim. He is set up by Lola, his Mentor’s ex-prostitute trophy wife in her insane wish to have revenge for Bryan’s rejection of her in what looks like her murder and he begins again the struggle for vindication. Laura is beside him in this fight.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
