Zum Verstandnis der elektrochemischen stromquellen tragt es bei, die historische Entwicklung wenigstens in groben ZUgen zu kennen und die Systematik zu durchschauen. NaturgemaB kann hier nur ein 1 AbriB der technischen Geschichte gegeben werden. 1.1 Zur Geschichte der elektrochemischen Stromquellen Die EZektrizitatsZehre beginnt im Jahre 1600 mit dem Buch 'De Magnete' von William Gilbert. Aus den Beobachtungen an Bernstein und Schwefel entwickelt sich die Elektrostatik, die urn 1750 nahezu vollstandig ist. Elektrisiermaschine, Kondensatorflasche und Elektrophor sind bekannt. Der Begriff der Influenz ist bereits einigermaBen entwickelt. In den nachsten fUnfzig Jahren entsteht die Theorie des elektrischen Fluidums. Es folgt der Nachweis, daB Blitz und Funke das gleiche sind. Die erste, noch recht primitive Elektrotherapie wachst heran. Urn die Wende zum neunzehnten Jahrhundert wird die EZektro­ chemie entdeckt. Die Arbeiten von L. Galvani und A. Volta erg an­ zen die stromschwache Hochspannungs-Elektrostatik. Jetzt hat man starke Stromstarken zur VerfUgung, mit allerdings zunachst nur niedrigen Spannungen. Immerhin gelingt H. Davy die SchmelzfluB­ Elektrolyse und wird nun auch der Kohle-Lichtbogen entdeckt.
