Der Band befaßt sich mit einem Kardinalproblem der modernen Schizophrenieforschung der bislang noch weitgehend ungeklärt gebliebenen Frage nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen Produktivität und Defizienz. Nach einer Rekonstruktion der Entstehungsgeschichte des Problems bis zu seiner heutigen Reaktualisierung durch die angloamerikanische Schizophrenieforschung hin wird ein neuer Ansatz zur empirischen Untersuchung der Zusammenhangsfrage entwickelt. Im Mittelpunkt der Darstellung stehen die Ergebnisse einer empirischen Untersuchung der psychopathologischen Übergangsreihen zwischen Basis- und Erstrangsymptomen, die der Autor an 121 Schizophreniekranken durchgeführt hat. Sie weisen die Produktivitätsentwicklung als regressiv-reaktiven Bewältigungsversuch von kognitiven Wahrnehmungs-, Denk-, Handlungs- und Leibgefühlstörungen aus. Die Kenntnis der übergangsrelevanten Basissymptome eröffnet neue Möglichkeiten für Ursachenforschung, Früherkennung und Primärprävention.
