Drug importers had murdered his parents who were growing old and on holidays. Now Bamford was seething with anger. He had waited for the police to solve the case and they had not. Now he was determined to do it for them. All the training in the military had equipped him for undercover and silent attack and he was going ahead. Using assumed names and voices, he was passing himself off as a Texan. He had cleaned out the gang’s vault of millions of dollars and now, standing under a sturdy tree in the dark of evening he watched two drug runners walking toward him carrying a heavy bag on their way to the gang’s office. When they reached him in the dark he attacked. One step toward the driver and his left hand drove upwards and snapped the head back, breaking his neck. The money carrier turned to see what was happening and Bradford’s knee hit him hard in the groin. As he bent over Bradford’s long thin knife went in deep left of the neck and sliced sideways. The Asian was dead before he hit the sidewalk. Bamford took the heavy duffle bag full of money and walked away to drive back to the ranch the family had been running for over 130 years. There was evidence which would lead the police to the rest of the gang. In the coming days the police rounded up the remainder of the gang and reported having millions in drug money. Bamford read the reports on his computer and was happy to let the police take credit.-Art Eastly

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
